Jack of all trades, master of none- a curse or a hidden gift?

What if your restlessness is not confusion, but

a quiet form of genius?

“Why do you try everything?”

I’ve heard that question many times. One day, I’m painting for an exhibition. Another, I’m drafting a book on occupational therapy. Then, I’m supporting a new business idea at home. And each time, I catch the same expression in people’s eyes —

“Why can’t you just stick to one thing?”

Sometimes, even I’ve asked myself — Do I lack focus? Am I running from something Why doesn’t my mind settle on just one path? I remember during the pandemic, when the world had paused — I picked up a paintbrush. No plans, no goals. Just colors. It gave me peace. Eventually, I even showcased in exhibitions. But the paintings didn’t sell. And what happened next? That silent voice returned: “Maybe I’m not a real artist…”

Another day, I sat at my desk frustrated with work — and suddenly, an idea for a book structure came to me. It was about occupational therapy, but with a fresh lens. I began writing… and then stopped halfway.

Always starting… and stopping. Why?

It often makes me feel like I don’t finish anything. Maybe I lack discipline. Maybe clarity.

If you’ve ever felt like this, then guess what?

You’re just like me — a Jack of all trades. And contrary to what people say, that’s not a bad thing. Most people only quote the first part: “Jack of all trades, master of none.” But they forget the rest — and it changes everything: “…but oftentimes better than master of one.”

What makes us different — and powerful. As Jacks of all trades, we carry certain powers: We adapt to different roles, environments, and challenges with ease. We have curiosity across domains — allowing us to see connections others miss. We combine logic and creativity — making us natural problem-solvers. We’re versatile, intuitive, and multi-dimensional. And in today’s ever-changing world, that’s not a flaw — it’s a superpower.

But then… why do we still feel so lost sometimes?

Because the world around us pushes a single narrative: “Pick one thing. Master it. Stay in that lane.” And so we battle thoughts like: “What will people think? Will they call me flaky or unstable?” “Why can’t I just finish what I start?” “Am I falling behind everyone else?” These doubts creep in and quietly steal our joy. We begin questioning not just what we do, but who we are. Watching others climb a straight ladder makes us feel like we’re going in circles.

But the truth is: You’re not lost — you’re exploring. You’re not inconsistent — you’re expansive. You’re not behind — you’re just not on the same map.

So… what should we do?

Ask yourself honestly– Would I be truly happy doing just one thing every day for life? If the answer is no — stop trying to shrink into a mold that was never made for you.

Give your talents room– Without guilt. Your creativity, logic, intuition, emotion — they all deserve space to grow. Your passions are not competing with each other — they’re coexisting.

Don’t try to do everything at once– Pick one door at a time. Explore it fully. Then move to the next — not out of failure, but out of evolution.

Reframe your self-doubt– Starting many things doesn’t make you flaky. It makes you a seeker. Finishing is important — but so is feeling alive while you do it.

Surround yourself with people who get it– Not everyone will understand your layered path — and that’s okay. Find those who celebrate your depth, not just your outcome.

A Note to All Wanderers: Being a Jack of all trades isn’t a weakness — it’s your gift. It means you’re curious enough to explore, brave enough to start, and wise enough to shift when your soul asks for more. The world may question your direction. But this journey isn’t about fitting in — it’s about becoming.

So the next time someone says: “You do everything…”

Just smile and say: “Yes. Because I only get one life — and I refuse to live it one-dimensional.”
