Art is not just a skill; it’s a journey of self-expression, creativity, and persistence. I am a self-taught artist who discovered this passion during the challenging times of the pandemic. My journey—from creating art at home in my free time to hosting solo exhibitions—has taught me invaluable lessons. Balancing the roles of a wife, mother to a 10-year-old boy, and a daughter-in-law, I’ve learned to nurture my artistic side amidst life’s responsibilities.
Here are some habits that I’ve cultivated—inspired by my experiences and those of eminent artists—that can help you crack the code to becoming an artist
1. Daily Practice: Dedicate 10 Minutes to
Art
Consistency is key to mastering any skill, and art is no exception. As someone juggling many roles, I understand how difficult it can be to carve out time for yourself. But once I found my soul in painting, I made it a priority to devote time to it daily. Whether I’m on vacation, visiting my parents, or traveling, my mind stays immersed in art—thinking about color combinations, techniques, or sketching ideas in my head.
Even on my busiest days, I find at least 10 minutes to practice. Sometimes, I carry a small sketchbook to doodle during breaks or brainstorm ideas while waiting for my son at the park. These small, regular sessions not only improve your skills but also keep your creative juices flowing.
Pablo Picasso once said: “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”
Even a few minutes of daily effort can lead to tremendous growth over time.

2. Master Time Management
If you’re a full-time artist, your life may revolve around art. But for those of us who discovered our passion later in life, managing time becomes crucial. I’ve learned to integrate art into my daily routine without neglecting my responsibilities as a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law.
Here’s how I do it: When inspiration strikes, I prepare—cutting a piece of canvas early in the morning or painting the base layer at night when everyone else is asleep. During the day, I sketch in my diary or plan colors while my son is at tennis practice. By breaking down tasks into manageable steps, I find time to nurture my creativity without feeling overwhelmed.
Practical Tip: Use a planner or set reminders for your art sessions, even if they’re short. Small, consistent efforts add up to big achievements.
Vincent Van Gogh was so right: “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”
3. Learn from Others, but Stay Original
When I began my art journey, I often mimicked works from YouTube tutorials or other artists. While it’s an excellent way to learn, it’s not where your journey should end. True growth as an artist comes when you discover your unique niche or style—something that sets you apart.
For instance, I started experimenting with color techniques and compositions that felt authentic to me. Over time, I realized my love for portraying the female form and using vibrant colors. Observing other artists inspires me, but I now focus on evolving my own voice.
I suggest: Attend exhibitions or watch art tutorials, but always ask yourself, “How can I make this idea my own?”
Salvador Dalí once said: “You have to systematically create confusion; it sets creativity free. Everything that is contradictory creates life.”
4. Embrace Colors Without Hesitation
Colors are the soul of art and, honestly, my soul too. If you look at my paintings, you’ll notice my love for bold and vibrant hues. Initially, I hesitated to experiment with unusual color combinations. Once, I mixed a palette that disappointed me, and I thought I’d ruined the painting. But when it dried, it turned out stunning and sold first at my exhibition!
Sometimes, the most unplanned experiments create magic. Let go of fear and play with colors. Whether you’re using pastels, neon shades, or unconventional tones, trust your instincts and see where they take you.
Wassily Kandinsky captured it perfectly: “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.”
5. Experiment with Techniques
Art is not confined to one medium or style. I’ve tried everything from fluid art to textured abstracts, and every experiment has taught me something new. For example, I once used leaves to add texture to a painting, and the result was unexpectedly beautiful.
Switching between techniques keeps your creativity alive. If you’ve only painted with brushes, try palette knives or sponges. Experiment with layering, or incorporate elements like sand or fabric into your work. Every attempt brings you closer to discovering your true artistic voice.
Maya Angelou beautifully said: “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
6. Create Your Own Style
This is a lesson I’m still learning. At my recent solo exhibition, I realized that while my paintings were beautiful, they lacked a cohesive style that defined me as an artist. Since then, I’ve been reflecting on what truly resonates with me—what makes my work uniquely mine.
Your style is your artistic fingerprint. It may take time to emerge, but as you create more, you’ll notice recurring themes, colors, or techniques. Embrace these elements and let them evolve naturally.
I suggest: Pay attention to what you love most about creating art. Build on those elements to shape your signature style.
Andy Warhol said it best: “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad; whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”
Art is a journey of self-discovery and growth. By cultivating these habits, you can nurture your creativity and develop your skills as an artist. Remember, every masterpiece begins with a single brushstroke. Start small, stay consistent, and let your imagination guide you.
